The victim, who was 34, was targeted on Smallbrook Queensway street, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements. It happened right near Bullring mall on Friday Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, appeared before Birmingham Magistrates Court Monday morning, charged over the attack. He was previously accused with attempted murder however after the woman's death charges were upgraded to murder. Police Response The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives. Authorities confirmed they believed the incident constituted a random assault Investigators are requesting any eyewitnesses who might have observed the accused, identified as a Black British national, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, black hat, trainers with a backpack. Incident Location The knife attack occurred outside Bullring retail complex, across from the main entrance of New Street railway station. Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine why it happened. Eyewitness Reports An area worker, who works nearby, recounted the emergency response after completing her work period at about 22:00 Friday night. She characterized the location as extremely disorderly, adding that some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances around 9 PM. "A lot of my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre." Another individual, 25, from Stoke-on-Trent, mentioned visiting to Birmingham fairly regularly visiting his partner resident there, expressing concern regarding the incident. "It causes concern for my girlfriend," he stated. "She doesn't drive and works at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked occurred, you know, it's terrible."
