European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments in the News

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce security grants to local governments that do not comply with specific federal immigration rules. The judge ruled the case was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to accept dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, following signing a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit to demand the removal of the current president’s name from a prominent performing arts center in the capital.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with historical international strategies.
